If Mark McGwire did not take steroids during that magical 1998 season. then...

Barry Bonds would have never gone down that path of taking performance-enhancing substances. Think about this; before and during the 1998 season, Barry Bonds was arguably the best power-speed combination in MLB history. Great successful steal percentage, 30+ HR power, and clearly the best player on three Pirate divisional titles and one-near miss NL title. I truly believe that he did get his fair share of respect up to 1998. However, when McGwire and Sosa played off each other and got all the accolades in their drive to break Maris' HR record, I think Bonds truly got jealous and perhaps he suspected some cheating on their part. Remember, McGwire had andro (a legal substance at the time in baseball) in his locker, for all to see.
Just wondering, just check out photos of Bonds pre-1998 and post 1998. You will see a big difference.
